Welcome to LGBTQ+ History Month 2024

Feb 1, 2024

Every year, February marks LGBTQ+ History Month.  The theme for this year is Medicine – #UnderTheScope – which celebrates LGBTQ+ peoples’ contribution to the field of Medicine and Healthcare both historically and today.

The aim is to showcase the amazing work of LGBTQ+ staff across the NHS and in other healthcare settings, in providing healthcare, especially during the pandemic. Whilst still shining a light on the history of the LGBTQ+ community’s experience of receiving healthcare which has been extremely complicated leaving LGBTQ+ people still facing health inequalities even today.  We’ll be picking up on that theme in several ways during the month but today we want to take the opportunity of sharing some exciting news in terms of our Pride Pop Ups.

Between the 8th February and 10th February, Pride in Plymouth have been invited to take over The Drum Theatre at Theatre Royal Plymouth to celebrate LGBTQ+ History month for 2024.

As part of this, we’ll be holding one of our Pride Pop Up sessions on Thursday 8th February at 11am – 3pm in the theatre’s Gallery Café space and we’d like to invite people to drop in and get involved.

Then we’ll be having three nights in The Drum theatre promoting and sharing queer stories and voices in a whole number of different ways.

Later on Thursday 8th February at 7.15pm, we’ll be presenting in The Drum an In Conversation Event: The Importance and Power of Community Archives where we delve into the South West’s LGBTQ+ history. Through investigating archival materials, participants are invited to share their own experiences to add to the growing archive and today’s LGBTQ+ history. The session will include a presentation from Dr Alan Butler and Donna Maughan around the power of community archives.

On Friday 9th February at 7.15pm, we’ll be presenting, in conjunction with our friends at Queer Out Loud and Down Stage Write, a Queer Voices Platform where you can join us for an evening of LGBTQ+ joy with a platform for local performers to present monologues and short pieces of work.

Then, on Saturday 10th February at 7.15pm, we’ll be teaming up with our friends at Crème de la Crème to present a Crème de la Crème Cabaret night for an evening filled with spoken word, laughs and live music.

It’s going to be an amazing weekend and we hope you’ll come and be part of it.

LGBT+ History Month 2025

LGBT+ History Month 2025

Here at Pride in Plymouth, we’ve always been very interested in LGBTQ+ history, as you’ll have seen through the development of our Community Archive. As a result, you won’t be surprised to hear that we’re looking forward to the 20th LGBT+ History month happening this February. The theme for this year is “Activism and Social Change” and Schools Out team, who drive the event each year, are focussing on five historical figures who they feel fit the description of activists – Octavia Hill, Ivor Cummings, Annie Kenney, Charlie Kiss and Olaudah Equiano. We’ll be looking at each one of these in the run up to the month and also sharing some of the exciting activities that we have planned in the city.
