From Tuesday 30th June through to Sunday 11th August. We will be displaying work of LGBTQ Artist along with extracts from our own Award winning Plymouth LGBT Archive. The exhibition will be complemented by a series of talks & workshops at the Royal William Yard.
The theme is “Proud Spaces” looking at space/situations where someone can be themselves. LGBT lives are performed in places where people feel safe to do so. Those spaces are getting larger and more visible now but there is still some way to go before all spaces are safe.
The idea of Proud Spaces arises from the notion that Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender + lives have often, through modern history, been associated with being different, deviant and, for some, even criminal. As a result, people who identify in this way have been taught, by society, to attach feelings of shame to those identities.
LGBT+ lives have therefore only been shared and performed in spaces where people felt able to act differently. As time has gone on those spaces have become more mainstream and more visible to the general public but there is still a distance to travel before everyone feels safe to truly express all the aspects of their identity in all the places which we go. This exhibition explores that process and how it feels for those push against the boundaries.
