Pride in Plymouth are excited to announce our latest HLF funded project that will gather more stories and history from Lesbians in Plymouth, for inclusion in the existing Plymouth LGBT Community Archive.
Watch Pride in Plymouth co-director Jo Lewis being interviewed by The Herald talking about this new history project .
In the interview Jo said:
“Lesbians have a double whammy really: women are largely missing from history and I think at the moment that is coming a little bit more to the forefront; there is more awareness that history should reflect the population and the population is half female.“
In 2011/12 Pride in Plymouth was a one of the collaborative partners of the HLF funded ‘Pride in Our Past‘ project that formed the foundations of Plymouth LGBT Community Archive. Out of 46 contributors only 6 (13%) were women.
The ‘Lesbian Voices in Plymouth Past and Present‘ project is going to help redress this imbalance. There will be a series of workshops and events where Plymouth lesbians will have the opportunity to tell their own stories, be involved in telling others whilst creating art relating to those stories, exploring aspects of Plymouth’s heritage previously neglected.
