Lesbian Voices of Plymouth- Past and Present
Women are largely missing from history, lesbians even more so as reflected in the award winning Plymouth LGBT Archive. This archive hosted by Pride in Plymouth and the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office currently stands at forty-six interviews and only six are with women.
In an attempt to redress this imbalance, the Heritage Lottery Fund have provided Pride in Plymouth with £46000 worth of funding to implement the Lesbian Voices of Plymouth – Past and Present project which will add thirty-four lesbian interviews to the existing archive.
Volunteers will also create a thematically organised, lesbian history website from interviews and recordings – obtained from a series of workshops, which will encourage intergenerational discourse between lesbians in Plymouth.
The workshops will enable all generations to explore their histories – using personal timelines and themed conversations. To see daily life as an important aspect of local history and encourage movement from the personal to the public in enabling us all to see the links in these histories.
The collected materials will be included, along with other archive materials and drama in a web-based lesbian trail of Plymouth. There will be opportunities for volunteers to gain varied work experience and new skills while encouraging lesbians to see their equal place in both the LGBT community and the wider community.
